Candelabras are enjoying a cool resurgence—I love how tall tapers lend a mysterious, romantic, Old World feel. Lady Gaga’s Thanksgiving Special featured dozens of candelabras illuminating her darkly intimate set. It was interesting to note that battery operated taper candles were used, and no attempt was made to conceal the fact—which is exactly the way faux items should be shown.
In the rental world, we embrace the candelabra as well, but NOT how dripping wax damages our linen. We are discussing the possibility of requiring dripless or battery operated tapers to be included with candelabra rental. This may not only protect our linens from wax, but also protect clients from replacement fees.
While on the topic, here’s my take on leaning tapers: It’s always best to try to install the tapers straight, but I don’t mind the natural look of leaning tapers. Not every candle in a candelabra needs to be stick straight---just as not every flower in an arrangement must be exact. Disruption is an important element of design.
